Gone are the days when horror movies were all made by the Ramsay Brothers in the 80s, and there was not a whole lot of 'horror' in those movies. Masked creatures and bad makeup seldom managed to scare those who were used to watching the elite Hollywood style scary movies that ranked high on eerieness and good production. Not to take anything away from the Ramsay Brothers, they did manage to scare and attract a whole nation with their blood, gore and soft-porn filled genre even though those movies lacked the class that the scary movies of Bimal Roy and Kamal Amrohi had in the 50s and 60s.
Indian film industry has come a long way since then. 'Bhoot' by Ram Gopal Verma was one of those movies that didn't have much in terms of special effects, nor was it bloody or gory, but it sure was eerie enough to instill a fear in the viewers. Since 'Bhoot' we have seen several other movies which have done the same. 'Hum Kaun Hai', 'Rakht', 'Krishna Cottage', 'Darna Mana Hai', '88 Antop Hills', 'Raaz', 'Sandhya' to name just a few. They may be low on blood and gore, but their 'eerieness' factor is very high. Good production, good cinematography are all part of the deal.
This 'spook-fest' hasn't ended yet. Rest assured you will be seeing a whole lot of eerie movies coming soon to a theatre near you, mainly because they work and bring in the cash. For one, Ram Gopal Verma is back with his new venture that promises to be as scary, if not scarier than 'Bhoot'. The movie, initially named 'Shanti Kutir' and now called 'Vaastu Shastra' stars Sushmita Sen, Chakravarthy (of the 'Satya' fame), Peeya Rai Choudhuri, Purab Kohli, Rajpal Yadav and Sayaji Shinde. A 'K. Sera Sera' production in association with Ram Gopal Verma and directed by Saurabh Narang, 'Vaastu Shastra' is set to be released on the 22nd of October, just days before Halloween.
