Taare Zameen Par marks the debut of ace actor Aamir Khan, as a director to watch out for. To select a story which is not considered "mainstream" requires courage. All the more when its ones own debut film as director!

Ishaan Awasthi (Darsheel Safary) is a dreamer. The eight-year-old boy lives in his own world, which is filled with wonders that others fail to appreciate. Things like colors, fish, dogs and kites fascinate him immensely but in the world of adults they are just not worth it! Ishaan just cannot seem to get anything right in class. And his parents (played by Tisca Chopra and Vipin Sharma) have no clue about his being dyslexic! To make matters worse, Ishaan's elder brother is an achiever. When the parents feel that they can handle him no more, they decide to send him off to a boarding school, where he will hopefully be disciplined. It is at the boarding school that the new art teacher Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan), realizes that something's bothering Ishaan and takes it upon himself to find out the reason and solve it.

Darsheel Safary, as the protagonist, is undisputedly the best performer in the film. It is a performance, which stays with you long after one has exited the theatres. Tisca Chopra as Ishaan's mother is excellent and delivers a fine restrained performance. On the other hand, Vipin Sharma as the boy's father delivers a performance, which can be termed as the worst in the entire film. Sachet Engineer as Ishaan's elder brother and Tanay Cheda as Ishaan's friend Rajan Damodaran are also very good. As usual, Aamir Khan performs very well.
Shankar Ehsaan Loy's music is good and very in sync with the feel of the movie. Also, Prasoon Joshi writes wonderful lyrics, especially in "Maa". The editing though falters, as the film seems go on and on. If only the film was tighter, especially the second half, the film would have been a breeze. Setu's cinematography is very good. And yes, Amole Gupte has written a truly wonderful script!

The film is a brave effort by Aamir Khan, the director, as the film is not just about a dyslexic kid but it continues to keep him the central character throughout. Aamir Khan, the actor, is just another character in the story and makes his entry just before the interval point. Though it has been publicized as a children's film, it is more of a film about children and a must watch for all parents. Although the story has its shortcomings, things are repetitive and songs pop up every now and then, there is no denying that this is still a very good film.

This one is a definite must watch!
